GET READY FOR SPRING!
As the snow melts and the days lengthen, spring presents the perfect opportunity to revitalize your lawn and garden, setting the stage for a season of vibrant beauty and outdoor enjoyment.
When it comes to maintaining your home’s appeal and functionality, the significance of regular lawn care cannot be overstated. A well-maintained landscape is not just about aesthetics; it serves as the foundation for a healthy outdoor environment and can significantly impact your property’s overall value and usability.
Preparing Your Garden Beds
Two to three weeks before planting, prepare your garden beds for optimal growth. Begin by removing weeds, ensuring you get the entire root system to prevent regrowth. Loosen compacted soil by turning over the top 6-8 inches with a garden fork, improving aeration and root penetration. Amend the soil with compost to enhance fertility, drainage, and moisture retention. Before adding fertilizer, consider performing a soil test to determine your specific nutrient needs. Incorporate the recommended fertilizer according to the types of plants you intend to grow. Finally, apply a layer of mulch (e.g., shredded bark, wood chips) to suppress weeds, retain moisture, and gradually enrich the soil as it decomposes.
Splitting plants about every 2-3 years provides you with new plants that you can plant elsewhere, and keeps older plants healthy allowing them lots of room to grow and spread.
Tree and Shrub Care
Remove any burlap you used to protect bushes/trees from the harsh winter.
If trees and bushes have not been trimmed before winter, Spring is a great time to get the trimming done before the tree starts leafing out.
Remove dead branches once you see them will help your tree to spread out and fill the gaps.
Perennial and bush maintenance before shrubs begin to bud and form leaves by giving plants a light pruning. Do not prune if there are signs of growth. If perennials weren’t winterized, they should be cut down to allow new growth. Ornamental grasses should be cut back down just above the ground. This allows plants to put up fresh growth.
Lawn Maintenance
Dethatching your lawn in the spring removes dead grass and leaves, twigs and debris from the winter which will allow your lawn to breathe and help new grass grow.
Lawn aeration usually happens during the spring months when the soil is soft and easy to work. Aeration allows your lawn to breathe and offers you the option to add seed to the soil. Fertilization at this time will allow it to fall in the holes that are created by aeration.
