Joel Howes is the proud owner of Howes Lawn & Landscape. He started the business and expanded it into a full-service landscaping company in 2011. Howes Lawn & Landscape will be celebrating 30 years in business this June. Joel and his team have developed a level of expert knowledge and experience for any landscaping requirements.
Joel began working in landscaping right out of high school. At the age of twelve, he was helping neighbours by cutting lawns with a push mower. He decided to start his own business after high school with the encouragement of his father and purchased his first riding lawn mower. He expanded his services from cutting grass to garden maintenance once clients began requesting help with trimming shrubs and maintaining gardens. In 2008 he hired his first employee to help with the growing clientele and expanded into landscape design and build with a desire to broaden his horizons. This allowed him to purchase larger equipment to help with the efficiency of the growing business demands. In 2021 Joel reached out to a peer who was working in concrete and became determined to learn about the concrete business since it often goes hand in hand with the landscape and design aspect of his business.
Growing his knowledge and expertise in hardscaping is something Joel particularly enjoys. Today, Howes Lawn & Landscape Inc. offers grass maintenance, garden maintenance, lawn care, landscaping design and build, concrete flatwork, landscape materials and snow removal services. His lawn care services include aeration, overseeding, fertilization, and lime application. Landscape design and build include turning clients’ dreams for their outdoor living spaces into a reality with both hard and softscapes and garden bed designs. Concrete flatwork includes driveways, walkways, sidewalks, and pads. They also prepare the areas, pour and finish the concrete and can provide coloured, stamped, and broom-finished concrete. They have landscape materials sold in bulk that can be purchased for pick up or delivery such as mulch, top soil, stone and gravel. In November 2024 the company purchased a tri-axle dump truck to provide even more services to their clients.
Throughout the years Joel has dealt with a number of challenges the industry poses. He’s learned to address them with a well-thought-out plan and enjoys tackling new situations and helping clients problem-solve to a satisfactory resolution. For Joel, he believes in investing his heart and soul into his business. Seeing the fruits of his labour is what brings him a deep level of satisfaction.
