Celebrating 30 Years of Excellence: Meet Joel Howes & Howes Lawn & Landscape Inc.

In the heart of Huron County, one local business has grown from humble beginnings into a cornerstone of quality landscaping service. This June, Howes Lawn & Landscape Inc. celebrates an incredible milestone—30 years in business. At the helm is Joel Howes, a passionate, hardworking entrepreneur who’s poured his heart and soul into every lawn mowed, garden bed planted, and concrete pad poured since the day he started.

From Push Mowers to Professional Excellence

Joel’s landscaping journey began long before the company was officially founded in 1995. At just 12 years old, he was already pushing a mower through neighborhood lawns, earning trust and gaining hands-on experience. Fresh out of high school, with encouragement from his father, Joel took a leap of faith—purchasing his first riding mower and officially starting his own business.

What began as a simple lawn-cutting operation soon evolved. As clients started asking for garden maintenance and shrub trimming, Joel responded by expanding his services. In 2008, he hired his first employee, further increasing the business's capacity. By 2011, the company had grown into a full-service landscaping provider, offering everything from design and build projects to seasonal maintenance and more.

A Commitment to Growth and Learning

Never one to rest on his achievements, Joel continued to broaden his expertise. In 2021, he reached out to a peer in the concrete business and immersed himself in learning about concrete flatwork—a natural complement to landscaping. This expansion added new dimensions to the company’s capabilities, including driveways, walkways, patios, and decorative stamped concrete finishes.

In November 2024, Joel added a tri-axle dump truck to the company’s fleet, enabling even more efficient delivery and material transport for large-scale projects. Today, Howes Lawn & Landscape Inc. proudly offers services including:

  • Lawn Care: Aeration, overseeding, fertilization, lime application
     

  • Garden & Lawn Maintenance: Grass cutting, garden upkeep, seasonal cleanup
     

  • Landscape Design & Build: Custom outdoor spaces, softscapes, hardscapes, and garden bed designs
     

  • Concrete Flatwork: Preparation, pouring, and finishing—including coloured, stamped, and broom finishes
     

  • Bulk Landscape Materials: Mulch, topsoil, gravel, and stone available for pickup or delivery
     

  • Winter Services: Snow removal for both residential and commercial clients

Honouring the Past, Embracing the Future

This year also marks another significant moment for Joel and his team—the continuation of a respected legacy. With the retirement of Rick and Joanne Turner from Art’s Landscaping, Howes Lawn & Landscape Inc. is proud to step in and carry the torch.

“Congratulations to Rick & Joanne on their well-earned retirement. We are honoured to continue the high standards you’ve established,” Joel shares.

Several former team members from Art’s Landscaping have now joined the Howes crew, ensuring continuity, familiarity, and the same great service that longtime clients have come to expect.

Giving Back to the Community

Beyond landscaping, Joel and his team believe in giving back. Over the years, Howes Lawn & Landscape Inc. has supported organizations such as Huron Hospice, Clinton Public Hospital Foundation, and the Huron Pioneer Thresher & Hobby Association—a reflection of their deep roots in the local community.
